“Look at that little fat chap, we’ll murder this lot” is a level of poetic hubris that Sophocles would envy

What’s ironic here is that they’re not wrong about any of this except the green thumbs up. She is very serious about and qualified for the job she was hired to do.

I was also thinking about the Bolshevik’s seizure of power (yes I know this is the other side politically, don’t @ me fellow leftists) but that was like the quintessential extremely centralize top down state, as large as it was.

If we're insisting on historical metaphors we're in the "Mussolini is Prime Minister but the other parliamentary parties haven't given him total authority yet" phase

I think way too much about Richard Evans’ Third Reich trilogy, but the second one - about 1933-1939 - is the one I learned the most from.

Yes, should’ve said that slavery isn’t an *exclusively* modern thing, but it very much is *also* a modern thing (and slavery wedded to capitalism is)

I am not as anti-car as I should be. I actually like driving! But man it’s up there with guns as officially sanctioned anti-social behavior destroying American life

Not the same as romanticizing the Middle Ages! We shouldn’t romanticize anything in history (at least on any kind of explanatory/educational/comparative level, knock yourself out at the Renaissance festival) but company towns, slavery, even the Nazis are all super modern phenomena

I know this is kind of David’s whole beat, but the phenomenon of modern people doing modern evil modernly, and getting called medieval for it, is fascinating and telling.

Going through one of my periodic attempts to convince myself that Sandinista! is better than London Calling (it’s not), but man what a great and depressingly relevant song this is.

This sounds cynical, but the Nazis, until the war, actually delivered standard of living increases to those they considered real Germans (including working class/former socialists). That this lot seems totally uninterested in that gives me some hope.

My Midwestern quibble with this is Twin Cities are more aligned with Great Lakes/the Great Lakes part of the North Woods than they are with the prairies to their west. Otherwise this is great (right down to Madison being a border territory between Chicago and Twin Cities spheres)
