I think Pete is a pretty savvy guy, and he knew what talking about parents having "fairness concerns" was going to lead to. And I also think that any response other than "this is not an issue beyond its use as a thin edge for anti-trans bigotry" isn't good enough.

This is where guys like @petebuttigieg.bsky.social trying to both sides basic human rights for Trans people leads, a nominally center-left party engaged in full throated bigotry

I doubt this is intentional but putting a big gold cross of Saint Andrew across the fasces is a bit on the nose

The 6YO has gotten absolutely obsessed with this song at summer camp, and I gotta say, it beats the hell out of its immediate predecessors in this category (It's Raining Tacos and Steve's Lava Chicken)

Everyone knows that the answer to "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" is: a really fun time to reflect on this great nation of ours, and have a hot dog

We just moved back to Madison, WI after a year in Paris and the main difference I noticed (beyond, you know, the bread, and the Metro, etc etc) is how much earlier it gets dark here in the summer

The wildest thing to me about these sorts of exercises is that Minneapolis is roughly in line with the south of France. Really makes you curse continental climates.

I'm sure that the Democratic primaries for 28 are going to be unbearable in lots of different and unique ways, but they'd be a lot better if Andy Beshear got Sturgill and/or Tyler Childers to write a campaign song like Huey Long and go around playing it everywhere

Every time I read about Woodrow Wilson it just makes me irrationally angry. His combination of gutter racism, unpleasant priggishness, and smug, sanctimonious self-confidence is almost impressive.

Lawyers (and doctors) were among the more enthusiastic supporters of the Nazi regime, particularly when it jettisoned some of the rougher street fighting elements & sought respectability. Can't write the Nuremberg Laws without competent lawyers. This history should be a core part of legal education.

Anchovies and red peppers on toast

Anchovies and red peppers on toast

Breakfast of anchovy and Calabrian chili toast or, as my Swedish ancestors would’ve called it:

“Jeez, that’s a bit spicy,” “but…its not cod,” or “tastes like evil Papist antichrist plots”

No, I promise, you can absolutely cut it as a grain farmer in Saskatchewan. Yes, I’m sure February is the time to start. No, you won’t need your phone.

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward the Kristol boys becoming Trotskyists again

Me: At 37 I’m comfortable in my own skin, have no illusions about being cool, and am probably more resistant to peer pressure than at any point in my life

Also Me: the 4 and 6YOs are on the back of the bike chanting “faster! Faster!” Shit, better go faster.

I love McGuinn’s quote about Gram Parsons and this album, “I wanted to hire him as a piano player, but it turned out he was like George Jones in a sequin suit and we just didn't know it yet.”

Irving Kristol started as a Trotskyist, this is a very funny generational arc

This is one of many things that Guy Gavriel Kay gets right in his history inspired fantasy. Curse tablets so that the charioteer for the fucking Greens breaks a leg etc etc

The model for Trumpism is just as much the Jim Crow South as it is European fascism, and the "Greatest Generation" was far from universal in its opposition to that.

A good an interesting piece, and I do think that there's a danger when we lose living memory of a traumatic period. But it's also worth remembering Orval Faubus. A young New Deal Democrat. A soldier who bravely fought Nazism. And a virulent, aggressive, segregationist.

It sounds like a @jamellebouie.net column, but everything is Reconstruction

Tooze in “The Deluge” drawing a connection between Wilson’s belief that it was good that the Union won the Civil War but that Reconstruction was an inexcusable and damaging attack on white supremacy, and his advocacy for “peace without victory” in WWI is fascinating.
