Gobsmacked to learn that this male Pied Flycatcher, currently feeding chicks at my coastal nestbox site in Eryri NP (and caught under BTO licence), was originally ringed as a chick over 150km away in the Lake District!

Struggling to get that perfect shot of your pet? Why not ask for professional help. I recently worked with handsome collie Pip and his mum, who said he “always looks crazed” in photos.

1/ New #BTOScience reveals that seabird population declines due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, can be detected using data collected by volunteer seawatchers. Read more ⬇️or visit our website ➡️ www.bto.org/HPAI-seawatching

The ease of inputting data and interpreting it wouldn't possible without the brilliant Trektellen website

Great to see Whitburn #seawatching data used (through @trektellen.bsky.social) With just 78 Bonxies logged in over 1000 hours observation in 2024, it has been the worst ever year since regular documented seawatching started here. 😢 #NEbirding #seabirds

Like London buses, my second paper published in the space of a week! Working on the (substantial) impacts of HPAI on seabirds, it was fascinating to find that population changes in some of the hardest-hit species are reflected in @trektellen.bsky.social seawatch counts. dx.doi.org/10.1080/0006...

We didn’t really get a sense either way - our questions weren’t designed with cultural heritage value in mind unfortunately. There was receptivity to valuing sites on their individual merits which I think could encompass a range of values.

Out today: my final paper from my postdoc at the @universityofhull.bsky.social, in which we explored the UK public's views on brownfield sites and biodiversity! So very excited to finally be publishing this paper - a labour of love.

It's nice over here, isn't it. Was a bit too quiet when I first made the switch back in Spring, but seems to have built up the critical mass now!

I haven't been doing as much wildlife photography in the run-up to launching @pawsomepictures-uk.bsky.social, but it was great to get out yesterday and see the super Snow Bunting flock on the Great Orme (with a genuine snowy backdrop to boot!) #ukbirding

The beach is probably my favourite place to shoot. Open vistas, golden light, and plenty of options for fun and games with the dog! Wherever you are in the UK, you’re never far from the coast, and we are blessed with some amazing beaches here in North Wales

A beautiful late-evening visit to my reservoir site yesterday. Herb-Robert proving it’s a rainforest by growing on a fallen tree, a metre above ground. Five eggs from the Nuthatches, and the Pied Flycatchers won’t be far behind…

Such a privilege to spend time in my two nestbox monitoring sites in the Carneddau - both around 250m elevation but with very different backdrops and characters. The season is now in full swing with the Pied Flycatchers back and nest building! Nests monitored under BTO licence

Awesome! I can’t be certain of that unfortunately, it was momentary glimpses as it scuttled around the undergrowth. Possibly had a white over metal but not certain

Yes, it was black inscribed (white lettering) on the left and metal on the right. Suspect it may have been ringed on Islay…? Feeding in a flock of 10 yesterday at Balnahard in the north of the island, about NR423999

Lots of colour-rings to be found on Colonsay. Already this trip, we’ve resighted multiple Barnacle Geese, Hooded Crows and Choughs (plus our target Greenland White-fronts). Even saw - but frustratingly failed to read - a Twite from one of @jamiedunning.bsky.social‘s schemes! #ukbirding

Making my way slowly north this week, towards Colonsay. I’ll be spending a long weekend trying to catch up with A3A and his pals. With a little luck, I’ll come back home with a laptop full of amazing migration data, and leave a setup behind to gather another winters’ worth of habitat usage data!🤞
