When I first moved to Toronto in 1998, my general rule was "if it's more than 20 minutes away take the street car."

When I moved away in 2019 my rule was "it's going to take an hour if you get on the TTC." No matter where. The decline in service was unmistakable.

It's easy to have no sympathy for these people, but I think this kind of illustrates how stuck many people are trapped between their ethics and just keeping their head above water.
