Opinion: In Alberta schools, books arenβt the threat β censorship is
The Alberta government should not be eroding the fundamental rights and freedoms of some of its most vulnerable community members.
βAlbertaβs order is precisely about banning books, as its direct effect is to force school authorities across the province to remove from their libraries a host of books deemed inappropriate by the state. This approach is textbook censorshipβ¦β

Save the date. Send the message that hate and discrimination are not welcome in Alberta or anywhere else in Canada.
A true Christian message is one of inclusion and love; not exclusion and hate.

Agreed. This isnβt about freedom of expression. This is about stopping hate and attacks against the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

No one is stopping Sean Feucht from hosting his shows in Canada, despite his criminal record.
He has no Charter right to have his shows hosted at public facilities, which must be safe and discrimination free spaces that uphold community standards.
Donβt believe the martyrdom.

Pro-Trump Christian musician to play Alberta legislature grounds in Edmonton
Sean Feucht, who has faced cancellations of his East Coast events, is to play at an event on the Alberta legislature grounds on Aug 22.
This βconcertβ should not be allowed to be held at any public owned facility, let alone the Alberta Legislature. Pull the permit like other cities have done.
There should be no space for hate on any public property.

As the far right and populism attempt to move human rights backwards, we cannot be complacent.

School librarians are smart people. They will follow the MO as it is written not how some wish it to be interpreted.
10.07.2025 21:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Is the MO needed, no. Itβs a red herring. Most School libraries already have policies in place for objectionable books/content.

The wording in the regulations is important and thatβs what any court challenge will be based upon. Nothing in the order bans 2SLGBTQ+ content. School libraries are free to continue what they do best. Ensure children see themselves represented in literature.

Students need to be able to learn about their bodies and those of others. This is what helps prevent abuse and promotes healthy relationships.

A major concern is how this MO limits access to comprehensive sexual health education resources in school libraries, which can be an important source of trusted information.

Good to see that NOTHING in this Ministerial Order will impact a students ability to learn about 2SLGBTQ+ identities at all school libraries, regardless of grade.

Instead of doubling down on its transphobia, the Alberta government should rescind all its anti-2SLGBTQ+ legislation.
Leave trans kids alone and focus on what matters most to Albertans - our economy, healthcare, housing, and affordability.

It is now time for the Alberta government to do the right thing and rescind all anti-2SLGBTQ+ legislation and respect the Charter and rule of law.
