It's crucial to confront the systemic barriers women face in research. This study shows that gender gaps in grant funding persist not because of research quality, but because women receive less favourable assessments as PIs. We can and must change this.

A butterfly with wings in blue and orange hues on a teal background with bokeh effect. White text above reads: "Quality over quantity. Shaping the future of research assessment." The image features a quote: "When career progression, funding allocations and institutional prestige are tied to simplified metrics distortions follow." Below is "Mandy Hill, Managing Director, Cambridge University Press." A person is shown wearing a striped vest over a white shirt, smiling against a light blue background. The image features a quote about sustainable and equitable futures in publishing, with emphasis on assessment reform, attributed to Monica Westin, Director of Open Policy Development at Cambridge University Press. Cover of the "Publishing Futures" report by Cambridge University Press, featuring text about delivering radical reform in academic publishing.

Writing in the @financialtimes.com today, Mandy Hill warns that rising publication volumes and oversimplified metrics risk overshadowing what truly matters: rigour, reproducibility, data sharing, peer review contributions, and long-term societal impact.

The image is an infographic titled "Open science creates economic value through reuse at scale," by PLOS. It highlights four benefits of reuse: prevents duplication of effort, accelerates research processes, compounds benefits through network effects, and enables reuse across sectors. The left side features a flowchart illustrating reuse from a single research output. On the right, a text box emphasizes that open science can enhance productivity and strengthen long-term performance when done correctly. A final note states, "Publishing is a vital part of the infrastructure that enables reuse at scale.

Open Science isn’t just a values choice. It’s an economic one.

We are sharing a new independent report by @technopolis-group.com on the economic benefits of #OpenScience and what drives value when research outputs are designed for reuse at scale: plos.io/4rdAxCY

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: TOP 101: An Overview of the Transparency and Openness Promotion Guidelines. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar. The Transparency and Openness Promotion Guidelines (TOP) is a policy framework that can provide specific recommendations for journals, research funders, universities, and researchers about practices that are designed to increase the verifiability of empirical research claims. TOP was updated in 2025 and contains three main parts: Research Practices, Verification Practices, and Verification Studies. This webinar will include an overview of these components and how TOP’s tiered and modular structure makes it applicable to a diverse community of researchers and policymakers. This webinar is part of COS’s ongoing campaign to demonstrate implementations of our Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) guidelines (https://bit.ly/top-guidelines), grounding our policy framework in real-world examples. If you have feedback, implementation stories, or lessons learned from working with TOP, get in touch with us at top@cos.io.
