Hello! I worked on the achievement icons for @refint.games's Ys vs. Trails :)

The format is a lil' different from Studio Pom's, since I wasn't provided a contact until the tail end of the process, but I think they ended up reading pretty well on Steam. hope y'all enjoy regardless!

I just read Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter's version of "31 Cypress Trees" and I have a few thoughts about how it's different from the XSeed version. For the unaware, this somewhat off-putting book is speculated to be allegorical to a hidden truth about the world Trails takes place in. It's found after solving the final mysterious riddle in a series of optional, missable sidequests. It's returned to the librarian seeking it, then quietly nestled away in an out-of-the-way bookshelf in Zeiss Central Factory. The original can be found on the wiki: https://falcom.wiki/wiki/31_Cypress_Trees This won't be a comparison of translation accuracy, as I can't read Japanese well enough to know which one is closer. I'll just be comparing the words themselves. Now, my comments:

The new version rhymes. This is nice (it's written like a poem after all), and I think could add to the sort of unsettling vibes that you can feel in the original, but... The wording in the last page is kind of vague. You could read it like he planted another 32 cypress trees, and then 31 of those died. But with the context of the XSeed version we can see it's clearly meant to be summarizing the full journey on this page. Possibly due in part to this vagueness, the new version loses out on the ominous vibe the XSeed version leaves you with. You go into the last page kind of subconsciously expecting it to be a happy ending--after all, the farmer stuck it out through all those failures and finally grew a tree. But then you get to the last lines: The good farmer Sheprott With his loving goodness for them all The good farmer Sheprott Brought thirty-one cypress trees to the depths of ruination And you're like, oh damn. Is this even a good outcome? Is it okay that this guy sacrificed all those trees? Is he really a "good farmer"? And it's this feeling that gets you to think, what was this book really trying to say? Compare this to the new translation:

Gentle farmer Ciplot Gave them love and care and trust. Gentle farmer Ciplot Lost thirty-one trees to the dust. "Lost...to the dust" is more passive-sounding than "Brought...to the depths of ruination." It's not placing responsibility on the farmer. It's just like, okay? Too bad for him, I guess. This could be mitigated by changing it to something like "Turned thirty-one trees into dust" but even then it's just not as impactful. The last line in the XSeed version kind of slaps you in the face; it's very drastic. The XSeed version is dissonant, insisting that Sheprott is a good, loving farmer who will kill as many trees as necessary until he gets one to grow. The GungHo version makes it sound like he's doing his best but just happened to have a bad run of it. He "gave them love and care and trust," but "lost" them anyway. Like I said before, I love how the new version rhymes and I think that could really play into the ominous vibes. If the XSeed version rhymed it would be even better, I think.

A character sheet of Cliona. her pallet is based on different types of chocolate (white, Ruby, Golden, Milk and dark) with pink eyes, long honey hair that goes all the way to the back of her knees despite being braided up to her shoulder. her style leans very cutesy while still being comfy and easy to move in. never shows off below her knee, she has some pretty bad scarring from an incident she went through when younger that derailed her previous career. Her hair covering tends to either be white or pink and sometimes will have cute designs. Also i know you are not supposed to colour ref sheets. I couldn't help myself so the front facing one has very minimal shading while the back view is left flat coloured.

Cliona is a Kiseki OC based in Edith. she owns a tiny but adorable sweet shop. It's not hugely popular but thats how she wants it. always willing to lend and ear or a hand to help. Occasionally has to close up shop for some side gig but loves baking above all.
