Carney risks being cast as an arrogant, out-of-touch elitist. Not a great image to take into an election campaign.

Could be Carney is misreading the public mood. Both on Trump + budget "austerity". In a snap election he risks losing voters to NDP, Bloc, Greens with CPC coming up the middle.

Carney's apology to Trump has set off a firestorm of criticism. That Carney is weak, obsequious. Not elbows up strong as promised. The "austerity"budget could possibly alienate more people. Not ideal if it sparks an election.
