against my better judgement I read a games tech thread on resetera today and learned that because a lot of people don't know what anti aliasing is that games don't actually need it

One thing in the game price discourse that makes me laugh is pointing out how N64 games were, and that they're cheaper after inflation than games are today. As if they live in the alternate universe where wages even remotely kept up with inflation and we aren't all significantly poorer than then.

I don't really have a horse in this "dev team size" race that's going on at the moment, but I'm happy that all of the most annoying people on the internet have something new that they don't really understand to be really annoying about.

Lots of amazing stuff in Mario Kart World, but so far the online races feel like a massive miss to me. It's basically like the only thing that actually matters is how close to the finish line you are when your turn to get battered by 8 billion items and sent to last place comes around.

I think specifically at having forgotten how to make *AA* video games? Feels like licensed games used to happily fit into that space but now everything has to be some massive AAA 100 billion dollar budget trend chasing monolith.

This is what I don't get by these "GTA will save us" takes. Judging by Fortnite, the "best" effect it can have is billionaires who don't know the industry throwing billions at a bunch of GTA clones and being baffled when it doesn't work and running away leaving us in a worse state than we started.

I think the GTA delay is good for almost everybody making games. Nobody has to compete with them for mindshare in 2025. Folks act like money flowing into "the industry" affects others, but it doesn't. This delay only affects GTA fans, who can wait, and take-two investors, who I don't care about.

Just felt like someone wanting to "um-actually" something quite good rather than an earnest desire to ensure that everyone who deserves credit gets it.

The article kind of annoyed me because while it's frustrating the role of outsource gets minimised, the important point is that it's still a far smaller team even when all that is included and making great games with smaller teams is actually really important for our industry's sustainability.
