I didn't get into Love Live until 2023 so I missed most of it. Even though I ended up kind of speedrunning everything over the past 2 years, it still feels like a lifetime of memories.

You're absolutely right. The Hasu music is really, really great and I think from a musical standpoint the franchise has only continued to improve. But when very clear narrative ends for Niji and Liella are already out there (or announced), and Hasu content is all locked behind a JP-only app [1/2]

So many questions, so few answers. And no matter what's true or how it's dealt with, it's only going to make a tenuous fan/staff relationship even more so when this kind of controversy comes up. Absolutely no way for anyone to win.

The internet is very quick to accuse and very slow to forgive. And you're right - for a brand as focused around happiness and positivity as LL is to be caught in this kind of stuff is just heartbreaking. I just want to enjoy happy songs and fun characters.

The entire discourse has become irrevocably toxic. Between people being primed to expect disappointment via companies/brands turning to AI slop and so much of the LL fandom being primed to expect disappointment because of previous things being handled poorly, it's just a minefield. 1/2

Lots to still unpack for sure. I'm interested to see if staff ends up addressing it. I've seen the theories suggesting it could have been a freelance artist using AI, since they're known to have freelancers contribute art for Hasu stuff.

Seeing this whole AI controversy with the Hasunosora album cover art is just incredibly demoralizing and not at all reassuring about the state of Love Live as a franchise and the state of the fandom as a whole. Incredibly bleak stuff.
