Our call to action is to recognise Neonatology as a paediatric subspecialty in all EU states and adopt the ETR Neonatology 3.0 as the reference for training duration, content, and evaluation.

The European School of Neonatology (ESN) within the European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR) has developed and recently updated the European Training Requirements (ETR 3.0) Neonatology with input from the EU national neonatal societies to modernise and harmonise training across Europe.

Yet across Europe there remain significant disparities in access to, and the quality of, care provided to vulnerable newborns.

It has therefore been a pleasure to be among peers who recognise the needs and suffering of others, and who are committed to improving care for all. A society’s level of civilisation is reflected in how it cares for its most vulnerable members.

We find ourselves in turbulent times, in which priorities appear to be shifting. Increasing emphasis is placed on improving one’s own circumstances, sometimes at the expense of attention for our fellow human beings, particularly those who are vulnerable, unwell, or less fortunate.

Today, on World Prematurity Day, I had the honour and privilege of being invited to speak at the distinguished international summit, Growing Europe 2025, in Vilnius, Lithuania.
