Semi‐automated seal detection on the Western Antarctic Peninsula: an unsupervised machine learning approach for detecting ice seals in aerial survey data This study presents a semi-automated, rule-based image analysis pipeline to detect ice seals in aerial surveys of the Western Antarctic Peninsula during an unusually low sea ice year. By using simple...

🚨New Paper Alert 🚨
This study is the first paper out of our #NSF #NERC @ukri.org project on Antarctic crabeater seals 🦭. It provides a new approach to detect seals and reports an alarming drop in seal density zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Happy (belated) #AntarcticaDay! This continent and associated marine environment are critical for the entire planet. And human activities are already causing major shifts in this remote region of the world.

**PhD opportunity @uniexecec.bsky.social** How is immunogenetic variation maintained in the wild?

Why are alleles that increase disease susceptibility maintained in populations, when natural selection should eliminate them?

I did tell one… but telling two felt a bit too self indulgent 🤷‍♂️ . I guess my social anxiety and imposter syndrome took over 🤣! But always so proud and grateful of being part of the @ologies.bsky.social family!

Almost every time I have worn my @ologies.bsky.social hoodie in Sitka I get comments about how amazing the podcast is by random people… and they don’t even know that I was on an episode! I got two people telling me it was their favorite podcast yesterday at the airport! #pinnipedologist

Polar stereographic map showing Antarctic sea ice concentration anomalies for August 2025 compared to a 1981-2010 average. Data is from https://nsidc.org/data/g02202/versions/5.

The rate of #Antarctic sea ice extent growth has increased over the last few weeks as we approach this year's annual maximum (austral winter). No new records will be set this year, thought current ice concentration remains quite low in several regions.
