I'm reading a lot of sports romance... alternating first person stuff is clearly easier to write (you can replay plot beats + use lots of rambling monologues) and match the jock mind space better... but yeah it can never match the genius of a free indirect discourse masterpiece (e.g. Austen, Woolf)
