Don't get me wrong -- I'm not excusing their choices. Instead, I'm trying to explain why they get sucked in, and why so many stay. When you spend your life being told that following the words of God's anointed leaders is the only way to get to heaven, you tend to believe it.

I know deeply devoted religious people who have been convinced by church leadership that this is the will of their God. They are good, smart people who got caught up in evil because they're gullible. Many turned to the church because it offered what the leadership said was hope for a better future.
