This should be interesting, I finally got the set, Mk1s to through to Mk5s. First impressions, very positive apart from the predictably hard seats. 13.45 ex Moor Street

A Southern idyll in the first year of BR operations. On 28 June 1948, former SECR C class No 1294, still with its SR livery and number, has strayed into Hampshire and is seen on a goods from Farnham to Bordon near Kingsley Halt, the only intermediate stopping place on the branch.

The proximity of the High Level and Low Level platforms at East Grinstead could not be more starkly demonstrated than in this view of ‘H’ class 0‐4‐4T No 31530 departing with a service to Three Bridges on 15 March 1958. crecy.co.uk/product/sout...

The new Southern Way No 72 has a piece on the Class 508 EMUs on the SR. Because of their time on Merseyside, you tend to forget they were made for the SR. Built at York, they were based on the 2PEP/4PEP prototypes of 1971, one of which, No 4001 is on a test run at Raynes Park in that year.

When the WR took over the Seaton branch ex GWR locos and push pull sets replaced the M7s and the SR ones. The now preserved No 6412 was the loco in use on this summer day in 1963. crecy.co.uk/product/sout...

From an article on the Seaton branch in SW No 72, for many years SR push pull sets and M7 tanks provided passenger services on the line. No 30021 pictured at the terminus shortly before the Southern Region ceded responsibility for the line to the Western Region in 1963.

Former LBSCR tank No 2081 recorded on 22 May 1948, still bearing its Southern number and lettering, is seen approaching East Grinstead (High Level) with a train from Tunbridge Wells. In January 1949, it was renumbered No 32029 by BR and survived until August 1951. crecy.co.uk/product/sout...

From a very interesting piece in SW 72 on the LBSCR 4-4-2Ts. With its builder’s plate prominent on the front splasher, No 22 was the second of the ‘I3’ class to be completed, in March 1908. Quite a contrast to the cover image on this issue. That's Southern Way, the content is always so varied.

The latest issue of Southern Way, Volume 72, is now available. In January 1966 there were less than 100 SR steam locos still in service. At Oxford, on 13 September No 34066 Spitfire, heads the 8.30am from Manchester to Poole, the day it took the GCR mainline for the last time.

"Everybody was suing each other, so I spent a lot of time on the overnight train from Glasgow to London for meetings with lawyers. I knew a guy who lived in a little flat off Baker Street. We'd sit, chat or play guitar there through the night." - Gerry Rafferty on 'Baker Street'

On 28 February 1959, No 5037 Montgomery Castle is on a short parcels train at Stockley, long before it became the junction for Heathrow. The spotless condition of the engine and its 85A Worcester shed plate suggests it might be on a running in turn after an overhaul at Swindon.

Former GWR 2-6-2T No 4524 is seen at Yelverton with a train for the Princetown branch in July 1955. The line which was just over 10 miles in length opened in 1883 and closed in March 1956. Princetown at 1,373 feet above sea level, was the highest station in England.

Southern Way Special Issue no. 20: Isle of Wight Railways in the 1950s

Today marks 70 years since the closure of the Newport-Sandown line. Find out how the #IsleofWight lost roughly two thirds of its railways in the decade before Beeching in my book “Southern Way Special No. 20: Isle of Wight Railways in the 1950s” crecy.co.uk/product/sout...
