Trump's Guantanamo plan invokes 'war on terror' to justify inhumane immigration policies The US president's executive order weaponises the post-9/11 'terrorism' framework to detain migrants at the notorious prison camp, long used to hold those cast as existential threats

โ€œBy invoking Guantanamo, he reinforces this racist stance [on immigrants], using the shock value of a site infamous for human rights abuses to frame migrants as a dire threat to national security.โ€ โ€” ๐ŸŽฏ as usual by @drmahahilal.bsky.social

It's no surprise that Trump wants to send 30K migrants to Guantanamo Bay b/c the base has always been a place for those rendered disposable & inconsequential. The Laken Riley Act echoes collective responsibility in the way the prison has been used to detain Muslim men and boys in the War on Terror.

Finally, writing has become a love of mine and a discipline and I take heed from the great James Baldwin, whose words always inspire me when I feel like I'm writing into an abyss.

Have you read my book? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Also, if you comment and share my post I'll randomly draw two names to send free promo codes for the audiobook (I'll draw names on Sunday night).

My taxonomy of the War on Terror includes 5 dimensions:
1) Militarism & Warfare
2) Draconian Immigration Policies
3) Surveillance
4) Federal Terrorism Prosecutions
5) Detention & Torture

The 5 modes of violence that I identified include:
1) Corporeal
2) Bordered
3) Panoptic
4) Juridical
5) Carceral

One of the ways I approached writing my book so that it could provide continued relevance in understanding the War on Terror, was to develop a taxonomy of the War on Terror & corresponding modes of violence as a framework for understanding the violence in the last two decades+ and as it continues.

It is my hope that my book will continue to be a resource for anyone who wants to learn about the devastation that was unleashed by the US on Muslims in the course of the War on Terror.

Only the United States, whose whole existence is rooted in death dealing, would have a march for life.

After 23 years, Guantanamo remains an omnipresent threat to Muslims Emblematic of institutionalised Islamophobia, the detention centre has placed Muslims outside of the law and continues to be used by US authorities to threaten their lives and rights

"As a frequently weaponised threat, Guantanamo has consistently been used by the state as a way of disciplining Muslim bodies by cultivating fear and trauma for any Muslims who resist or defy it.That's why it is past time to close and abolish the prison."

We are thrilled by the news that 11 Yemeni Guantanamo prisoners have been transferred to Oman, where they can hopefully start to build a new life. With that said, we know from working with survivors, however, that life after Guantanamo is full of trauma and struggles.

Finally, while this latest transfer brings the Guantanamo population down to 15 men, we must continue to push for the closure of the prison and the base, not just because of the brutal detention of the Muslim men housed there, but because of its use as a site for detaining and abusing migrants.

So the Guantanamo chapter, is far from over, for the men just transferred and the other survivors who have struggled for years and decades.

Hi ๐Ÿฆ‹! Itโ€™s good to be here, belatedly. Iโ€™m a psychologist & writer. My recent book โ€œDOING HARMโ€ examines the American Psychological Association's failure to adequately oppose the abuse & torture of US โ€œwar on terrorโ€ prisoners. Will APA respond differently in the future? That's an open question.

The Biden-Harris administration recently released their Countering Islamophobia & Anti-Arab Hatred Guide. Adding to the litany of existing critiques, I wrote an op-ed about the overarching framework of the guide & its problematic narratives & other conceptual issues. bit.ly/BidenIslamophobiaGuide

Every year on December 10th, states across the globe commemorate International Human Rights Day. Even though human rights are meant to be applied universally, we know that there are many communities across the globe who have had their rights consistently & systematically denied.
