A century ago, the European far-right railed against 'Judeo-Bolshevism' as a sinister, foreign and violent fifth column, threatening Europe from within. Today, Israel joins the European far-right in deploying the same scapegoating against Muslims.

When MTG repeats this phrase as a mantra, this is what much of her base hears. Christian Zionist fetishization of Israel is antisemitic- and so is Christian nationalist anti-Zionism.

is impossible for Christian nationalists to ignore. After 2,000 years of Christian thinking about Jews, it’s very difficult to see Israel as anything other than a signifier either of God’s presence or of God’s radical absence, the anti-God.

that Christian nationalists must overcome. Israel’s aspiration to Godliness in this view is a devilish deception. This is the same place Judaism has occupied in the Christian imagination for centuries, and the undertone of demonization in the ascription ‘secular government of Israel’
