Today we visited #Trollstigen in Åndalsnes, which was pretty stunning! After being closed for a year due to rockfall risks and major safety upgrades, the road just reopened on July 11, 2025. 🇳🇴⚒️ #photography

The M8.8 off Kamchatka appears to be the largest earthquake ever recorded that apparently didn't kill anyone. That's really remarkable, if true. ⚒️

Today’s M8.8 megathrust #earthquake near Kamchatka on first glance appears similar to the 1952 M8.8 event in location and size. Today’s quake has probably ruptured towards the SW, based on aftershocks (in purple) and preliminary rupture models. 🧪⚒️

Preliminary USGS finite fault slip solution

Someone earlier today incorrectly said the M8.8 Kamchatka earthquake hypocenter was too deep (preliminary depth was ~74km) to generate a tsunami. This was *badly* wrong, and the FF solution shows why: rupture may start at a point but it spreads over an *area*, with the main slip much shallower here

Tide gauge at Kahului

The aftershock sequence of the M7.4 foreshock (in purple) of July 20th overlaps with the epicenter of today’s M8.8 Kamchatka megathrust #earthquake (aftershocks in pink). The largest #tsunami amplitude measured by tide gauges was probably 1.7 m (from 0 to peak) at Kahului, Hawaii. 🧪⚒️

The #Tsunami Warning for Hawaii is now downgraded to an Advisory, meaning that the evacuation is over but a hazard still exists offshore. The largest recorded amplitudes were 1.74 m (5.7 ft.) in Kahului, and 1.5 m (4.9 ft.) in Hilo. Northern California is still under a Tsunami Warning. tsunami.gov

Train derailment that killed 3 in Germany apparently was caused by landslide Investigators believe a landslide brought on by heavy rainfall likely caused a regional train to derail in southern Germany, killing three people and injuring 41 more.
