Just because something is legal doesn’t make it safe. There is a reason why you can’t smoke in restaurants.
Same for Heavy Fuel Oil—the damage to the marine environment is indisputable. The cruise industry has lost this war.
Last year, instead of using the dedicated bus area in front of the Empress, they moved the shuttle stop to save cruise tourists the agony of walking about 1/4 of a km, or 800 feet. The humanity.
Victoria cruise season starts April 10. Will shuttles for cruise tourists (<2% of tourist spending) once again prevent full pedestrianized use of Government street for locals, and lucrative stay-over tourists (98+% of tourist spending)? @jeremycaradonnayyj.bsky.social
Same analysis for Maine.
Marketing our pristine waters to cruise passengers only to have cruise ships discharge millions of gallons of toxic scrubber wash along our coast.
A sad irony, isn’t it?

For a decade, Leon Black quietly built one of the largest #cruise lines in world. As CEO of Apollo Global Management he created Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings into the three brand cruise giant it is today. He also was secretly paying Jeffrey #Epstein $170 million

Just 58 days until Victoria resumes its place as Canada's busiest cruise port-of-call, thanks to billion dollar foreign corporations that pollute for profit.
“Scrubbers at present justify the continued use of heavy fuel oil (HFO), the dirtiest of all fuels. The shipping industry should get their act together by rapidly moving away from HFO and from fossil fuels in the longer term.”

Thriving zooplankton and cruise ships discharging toxic scrubber wash are incompatible. We hope that you will continue writing about these “tiny but mighty” members of the marine food web & the threats they face.

Follow a cruise ship from Seattle to Alaska & see all the harm it does! Thanks to Andrew Engelson for this stunning 2023 article. Update: the climate impact has risen from 1/3 of Seattle's to now more than half of Seattle's. @andyengelson.bsky.social hakaimagazine.com/features/cru...
Help protect the Salish Sea from toxic cruise ship scrubber pollution. Send a message to the Port of Seattle today!
Excellent leadership in Victoria!
@fairsailing.bsky.social has worked hard to build awareness in your beautiful city. We wish you success in your efforts to regulate fuel on ships, which would eliminate toxic scrubber wash discharge.
People laugh when we say cruise ships cause intensive noise pollution. They think unless it is an environmental harm to humans, it doesn’t count. They are wrong.
Cruise ship underwater noise is critically damaging to whales.
PS cruise ships cause noise pollution above water too.
The financial penalties to both owner and operator should be astronomical.
Idiots! And climate criminals.
Cruise line and passengers alike.
A growth industry the world can no longer afford — fiddling around that helps the world burn.

Late calls- we're a regulatory pit stop. In 2025, 82% of all ship calls in Victoria were required by an 1886 US law - cruise lines avoided more than CAD$1 billion in fines with a brief stop here. Majority of ships arrive after 7pm, stops are brief to comply with the law and avoid penalties.
You'll stop in Victoria to comply with an 1886 American law that requires a foreign stop on a US-to-US cruise itinerary. Your cruise line will avoid US$1.25 million in fines by stopping. Probably dump garbage here too. Don't buy a shore excursion to the Wax Museum - it closed in 2010.
Whale killers MSC enter the Alaskan market in 2026 and will have regular stops in Victoria. Where people will get off the ship and go on a whale watching cruise. Good luck, local whale population.

In our experience, residents don’t count at all. No consultation or discussions. Cruise industry privatizes the profits and forces impacts and costs onto residents. “Suck it, locals” seems to be the rule.
“hurt tourism” is cruise industry speak. Victoria can and should fight for sustainable tourism.
Let’s talk about the cost of cruise ship pollution and its effect on the health and welfare of humans, wildlife, our cities, oceans, environment & planet.

Fantastic news from Hawaii ~
Federal judge upholds Hawaii's new climate change tax on cruise passengers!
A federal judge's ruling allows Hawaii's new tourist tax, which includes a levy on cruise ship passengers, to take effect in 2026
The tax is estimated to generate nearly $100 million annually.
Imagine your neighbour idling diesel trucks on the road in front of your house for hours, 6 to 7 days a week, 7 months of the year. That’s us in Victoria BC. Our city welcomes 320+ cruise ships every year. We pay dearly with the effect on our health, environment & ecosystems. #climatecrisis #yyjpoli
French authorities have put a departmentwide set of cruise limits into force along the Alpes Maritimes coastline, covering high demand Riviera stops like Nice, Cannes, Villefranche sur Mer, and Menton.
What should travelers do?
Skip the polluting & chaotic cruise & take a land vacation instead.
This is such great news! In 2004, the Gully (off Nova Scotia) was designated a Marine Protected Area by the government of Canada. In the years since then, the northern bottlenose whale population in the area has grown by over 60%.
Thank you!!
How did cruise ships become such a catastrophe for the planet?
