Grammarly declined my request to interview CEO Shishir Mehrotra today. But it told me that in response to criticisms, it will allow experts to opt out of the feature by emailing expertoptout@superhuman.com.

The company gave me this statement over email:

We’ve heard the feedback about this tool and appreciate the engagement from those who have taken the time to raise thoughtful questions about the functionality and the experts surfaced. We agree that the product experience can be improved for both users and experts. The agent was designed to help users discover influential perspectives and scholarship that add value to their work. We want the people behind those perspectives to have greater control over whether their name is used, while providing new ways for influential voices to reach new audiences. Our goal is to improve Expert Review to deliver this outcome.

"Resources must be distributed, there's no point to have them if others don't" is the basic underpinning of the Indigenous potlatch societies on the NWC but soooo many archaeologists still struggle to understand wealth accumulation in this context

On a related note, "rich person's son" was used as an insult because it referenced children of leaders who didn't earn their status/wealth on their own merit/with the intention of fulfilling their kinship responsibilities to the community

One of my favorite oral historical stories is from Miluk and describes a greedy person who was accumulating wealth with no intention of sharing so they killed him ✨

There are three major forms of wealth: longevity, health, community and not in that order.

Money is a means to acquiring those riches, not the end goal.

Having 'plenty' means sharing it with community so everyone gets a crack at health & longevity.

Community lasts longer and better as a result.

The thing about mutual aid is that it requires you to get out of a hierarchical mindset where those in need are below you, not your peers, & you can't assist because they're not worthy humans. If you're privileged get out of only hanging with the privileged & meet some social scum eye to eye.

Perry: This St. Patrick’s Day, don’t forget Irish music’s anti-fascist roots Dropkick Murphys, the iconic Irish American punk band, are headlining a free block party March 6 near where Alex Pretti was killed by immigration agents, contributing columnist David M. Perry writes.

NEW β€œWe’re celebrating a tradition that is at its core about resisting occupation and maintaining community in the face of horrors. You can’t keep politics out of Irish music. No one should try, for two reasons. First, it’s ahistorical. Second, Minnesotans are ready for a big anti-fascist party.”

Suddenly, I was across the room, on the couch. A decisive one-arm toss from the man I had never stood up to before because I had always been afraid of how he would react, and now I knew for sure. I didn't move as he finished his point, but just let the words wash over me until it was quiet, knowing that the second he allowed me to get back up I would get dressed and get out of this house.

As I walked through the park that morning on my way to take temporary shelter with a friend, there were no more illusions. But the reality I was seeing was not the one my father had tried to brute force onto me, it was the one I had always seen, always suspected, but had been told over and over was a fantasy one. And that reality is this:

A better world is possible, but only if you refuse to listen to the people who want to take it from you.

My first summer home after starting college, Mike Brown was shot in Ferguson. My father triumphantly announced to me that there was security footage suggesting he had been stealing, as if that justified his execution in the street. I asked him when stealing a pack of cigarillos became a capital crime. He did not appreciate the question.

A few days later I woke to sound of him complaining about the protests to my mother and I came out of my bedroom, mad enough that I felt the need to argue back even though I was still in pajamas, even though I had never dared to discuss, much less argue, politics with my parents. My dad grew louder and angrier with every retort until I knew this had been a mistake, that there was no point in arguing with someone so clearly committed to the version of reality he'd watched on Fox News. I finally turned to leave, but this was also a mistake, it turned out. I felt my father's hand wrap around my arm as I walked away from him,
"I AM NOT DONE TALKING TO YOU!"

A few years later, in AP US History, an essay question asked if the early labor movement of the late 19th and early 20th century had been successful. I answered yes, citing the various achievements of early union organizing, like the 8 hour workday and health and safety standards. My teacher, a union member herself, shared my response (anonymously) with all of her classes, calling it "the best wrong answer she had ever received." Their goal, she said, was communism, and she apparently gave them no credit for trying.
