On June 23, 2024, I was on Filicudi in the Aeolian Islands when I noticed a flash on the southern horizon. It was brief and hard to see at first, but 5 minutes later it happened again. I realized what it was and set up my camera, and from 100 km away, I captured a nocturnal eruption at Mount Etna!

Unfortunately I didn’t have a lot of time in the park that day, so I decided to skip this hike to have more time at the eruption overlook.

Kīlauea Iki, a crater that filled with lava during the 1959 eruption. The hill on the far side is Pu‘upua‘i cinder cone, and behind it, the summit caldera.

It always upsets me whenever a geologic feature has been damaged/destroyed by people, especially by industrial activity. Like just because the resource is there doesn’t mean we should ruin nature to get it 😩

Southeast Crater of Etna. This used to be the volcano’s peak from 2021 to July 2024, but was overtaken by Voragine after a series of paroxysms at that crater.
