D) It depends on the story! Usually it's world building and character introduction. But a few just jump right into the action. Ahaha

I'm all over the place

dreams/dreamlike moments, or straight into whatever's happening

11.08.2025 18:22 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

for threads it's usually mid main scene (I guess it could be called straight into action?), and for one shots it's usually some context or action before the main scene

after reviewing the literature (my own fics) I can conclude that almost all of my stories begin with β€œCharacter is doing something” or β€œCharacter is thinking something” which I did not do intentionally and now I’m amused

11.08.2025 17:45 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

usually in the middle of action/reaction, or after something already happened. that and a mix of slight character introduction. dialogue too

11.08.2025 17:37 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

almost always action, but in a way that does character or concept/atmosphere/worldbuilding as well. i start with dialogue often, but now that i read through a bunch of fic beginnings, not as much as i sometimes fear! (bits from hungry blue, yellow fall, heartroot and for safekeeping respectively)

So far, my tendency is to do a mix of A and B? I'll begin setting the scene and then try to drop character's into it as I do that. Sometimes I'll start writing with C, but it never ends up being the actual first part of the story

11.08.2025 16:56 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

def depends! though i think i've used A the least. i can't think of any works where I start with a character intro (not that they dont exist i just cant think of any haha)

I tend to be a straight into the action or character introduction writer most of the time, but I find myself trying to combine all three a lot also. (To varying levels of success.)

I often lead with a simple statement about the state of things for the pov character, so i guess option A!

11.08.2025 15:18 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

A and B combined

11.08.2025 13:44 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

it truly depends on the story I think bc sometimes u just have to dive straight in to the action and sometimes u have to be like . this man is in the trenches rn and here is why

It really depends on what jumps out at me for the tone of the piece! I’ve noticed I’ve tended to start with world building more often, but a snappy one liner is gonna start me off no matter what

11.08.2025 13:38 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

it depends what the plot is for me. like for the vampirexhunter fic I've opened with a slight world building. but with a new chapter? sometimes its a continuation. other times I open with dialogue to set the scene

11.08.2025 12:43 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think I'm a mix of A and B, but more so A than B? I'd have to go back and actually look πŸ˜‚

11.08.2025 12:42 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It depends on the fic! Usually a mix of "world building" and "action" I guess if you count taking the time to talk about the scenery around the mc and what they're experiencing as world building.

4 examples from different fics. (Shaded, Drops of Gold, Magic In The Stars, Don't Leave Me Now)

i have actually no clue at all lmao. i guess a mix of a + b?

11.08.2025 12:33 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I like to do C best, I often write B and then remove that part and weave it in later heh.

im a big fan of opening with a paragraph explaining how the character is feeling in the moment about something that is happening to them

C) I like to start on a sentence directly set into an action

11.08.2025 12:10 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It's sort of all of the above?

I typically start with a character doing some action/having an internal monologue that sets the tone and explains a lot about the setting right away, so I can easily work from there.

It also tends to double as an interesting hook, I think. πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈπŸ™‚β€β†•οΈπŸ™‚β€β†•οΈ
