BREAKING: Look at this.
A new crypto account was opened yesterday morning.
30 minutes BEFORE Trump's announcement of 100% tariffs on China, it added a huge multi-million dollar levered Bitcoin short position, per YF.
The market dumped.
The trader made +$192 million in two hours.
Unusual.

The Art of the Impersonal Essay, by Zadie Smith
In my experience, every kind of writing requires some kind of self-soothing Jedi mind trick, and, when it comes to essay composition, the rectangle is mine.
If you're someone who hopes to write something that someone else will read, think about, and refract....you should this lookup this piece by Zadie Smith, and do just that.

I have always thought that the Hebrews 11:1, KJV, Definition of Faith was a lovely and intuitive characterization of the Good-Turing Estimator: "...the substance of things hoped for, the Evidence of Things not Seen"

Governor @gavinnewsom.bsky.social why not suspend the Non-partisan Redistricting Commissionw in Blue states, but with a *guarantee of reinstatement* when All States adopt them? Thus enshrining Democratic Values...

Who in the administration knew about Trump's latest tariff flip flop ahead of time? Did anyone buy or sell stocks, and profit at the public’s expense?
I'm writing to the White House — the public has a right to know.

Alright, I think people knew of the tariff pause and traded it beforehand.
You can see before Trump posted "buy" on Truth Social, traders opened $QQQ $TQQQ and $SPY calls
RIGHT BEFORE THE NEWS, someone opened $SPY 509 calls, expiring TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those calls are up 2100% in one hour.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.
No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.
1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

Finally, the middle class can pay more of their income (as Tariffs) to fund the Federal Government, so the Billionaires can get a break.

Tariffs, shmariffs..they'll come and they'll go..what matters is the $$$ Trillions in Market Value shifts, and just who is making money in well-timed Derivatives trades?
..but we'll never know, and they'll keep what billions they make.

As @cristalopes.bsky.social points out, one can re-examine data from quantitative studies and rebut (etc) and this can lead to useful dialogue, which is critical to Science. Honest Question: are there examples in SE of QUALITITATIVE work being rebutted? Replicated? Released data being reanalyzed?

As sad and scary the crash in D.C. is, it's worth bearing in mind ..
In 2023, about 43,000 people died from Gun Violence. Same year, less than 100 people died due to commercial air travel.

California has been paying utilities in other states to take its surplus electricity to avoid grid overload according to a report.
