Are Americans Afraid to Speak Their Minds? Two-thirds of Americans now say that they are afraid to say what they believe in public, because someone else might not like it.

I'm not afraid to speak my mind about things, but there are some things I decide I didn't know enough about, others I didn't see why need to be involved, and still others where my opinion is complicated enough I'll need a 5k word essay at least to explain it.

OpenAI Execs Mass Quit as Company Removes Control From Non-Profit Board and Hands It to Sam Altman ChatGPT maker OpenAI is losing even more executives β€” right as Reuters reportsΒ that it's looking to restructure its core business.

Hey remember last year when the OpenAI board all sounded alarm at sam Altman's sketchy and self-serving trajectory for the company and the tech press broadly portrayed them all as kooky doomers?

Fun film fact. In Escape from New York (1981) they used reflective tape on a miniature model of the city & filmed it under black light to approximate 'cutting-edge' wireframe CG, which would have blown the budget at the time.

Two men see a poster of Porpo, some sort of vacant-looking marketing cartoon. One man says "I love Porpo." The other says "I hate Porpo." The first one retorts "oh yeah? well, I purchased this button to support Porpo." The second man comes back with "fuck you, I bought a button myself." He points to it. It says "I hate Porpo." A third man notices this argument and says "Fellas, don't you see how silly it is to get this worked up about Porpo?" He smugly continues "that's why I purchased this button." He points to it. It says 'neutral on Porpo.'

Douglas Adams (Author of Hitchiker's Gude To The Galaxy)
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies

1 Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and just a natural part of the way the world works

2 Anything that is invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3 Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Everything Douglas Adams says.

THE POEM I DIDN'T WRITE

Here is the poem I was going to write
earlier, but didn't
because I heard you stirring.
I was thinking again
about that first morning in Zurich.
How we woke up before sunrise.
Disoriented for a minute. But going
out onto the balcony that looked down
over the river, and the old part of the city.
And simply standing there, speechless.
Nude. Watching the sky lighten.
So thrilled and happy. As if
we'd been put there
just at that moment.

Two in three shoppers won’t buy products in locked display cases Most end up trying to find the product in another store, according to a Consumer World survey.

Anti-theft deterrent also means anti-sales. Nice job, eggheads.

"Upon discovering that an item they want to buy is in a locked case, less than one in three shoppers (32%) get a store employee to unlock the case."
