"Διομήδης χρηστιανός" was carved above the grave of a Roman Messenian at a time when most of his fellow citizens still worshipped the old gods. Diomedes, who likely died in the late 3rd CE, was decided to boldly declare his identity on the family funerary monument among a pagan cemetery. #Messene

I'd raise another issue: most of the positive DNA samples studied are being regarded as coming from individuals who died of the plague. This is a relationship that needs to be proven, as part of the infected population survives. Also the archaeology of the cemeteries does not reveal a clear urgency.

The argumentation by Hines seems reasonable. Locating pre-541 samples of Yersinia Pestis in Britain causes a major disrupt in our understanding of the spread of the Justinianic Plague.

Islamic objects in Byzantine lands. A bronze disk weight found in #Amorium. Reflecting on material culture from Amorium, a city sacked in 838 CE by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mutassim. Ideas after a great conference on Early Medieval Byzantine #Anatolia, the frontier of Arab-Byzantine confrontation.
