The thing about transition care that we really need to internalize is that people have been calling it some kind of assimilitionist patriarchal technology since fucking Janice Raymond, and while the content of that allegation has changed over time it's always been the same bullshit.

I do think it's interesting that when talking about people who don't desire HRT you thought I was talking about non binary people. I'm a non binary person who needs HRT as do many others. A few weeks ago I came across a TikTok video by a diaspora creator talking about how "FGM" is dehumanizing language. "Call it excision and not mutilation, don't stigmatize the bodies of women who have experienced it!"

Here's the kicker.

The reason this matters is that right-wing movements and conservative regimes have similar goals and modes of operation everywhere, but left-wing politics can't even agree on the basics like patriarchy being an issue worldwide, or the oppression of women being something to take seriously.

Diaspora populations in the West, specifically, view the issues of their homeland or their culture through the lens of "Will talking about this make my culture look bad to white people?" and it's far past the time where that stops being important so fucking important.

Phrases like "white feminism" and "imperialism" and "decolonialism" have lost all meaning, subsumed by antifeminists and conservatives and people running PR for cultures they claim but never experience, all to dismiss the actual suffering of women the world over.

I don't have that much of a stake in this but I do understand the hurt. I just think it's worth recognising when it's time to center those with different needs from us

Not necessarily no but it does sting when the narrative of "not every trans person wants to transition ^^" is cited in stuff like the Cass review specifically to take away trans healthcare or when people say "you don't need HRT to be trans" to kids that have had their care taken away

The way Westerners discuss conservatism and oppressed people in non-Western cultures is so utterly, irreparably broken.

I did not say "white", by the way. I'd have said "white" if I meant "white".

Westerners homogenize non-Western cultures and cast them as either "benevolent" or "evil".

When discussing these cultures, the reality of life for any non-Western person is not centered at all. Westerners are performing for each other, showing off how knowledgeable and cultured thery are.

If you talk about misogyny in a non-Western culture, you are immediately assumed to be dismissing that culture as evil and barbaric, worthy of being nuked from orbit. This runs the high risk of you being called racist!

So, in order to prevent this, Westerners ignore any issues completely.

A non-Western culture cannot be a complex society with its own castes, classes, conflicts, and contradictions. It has to be enlightened, simpler, happier, more primitive but all the more wise and enriching for it.

Y'know, orientalism.

That's all Westerners can do. Orientalism or xenophobia.

Diaspora communities participate in this via something of an international 'honor culture'. Many assiduously champion their homeland cultures without knowing what it's like to actually grow up in it. No, my culture is very progressive and modern and not at all "backwards", white man! How dare you!

And then, when an actual non-Westerner shows up, a woman or a queer or a member of a marginalized community, they are silenced because their struggle, their oppression, their experiences, their lives, their EXISTENCE is very inconvenient to the quaint orientalist narratives being sold.
