Just out here in the deep blue #sailing #photography

Waterspouts are hard to describe to anyone who has not seen them. The emotions of sailing away from one, with your family on board a small sailboat, are even harder to convey. This thing had more than enough power to do serious damage and potentially flip our sailboat.

This monster chased us for what felt like an eternity. We sailed away as fast as we could, running at a tangential angle to the shelf cloud to try to escape the system. The closer it got, the darker that leading edge became. #wx #photography

5/7 The shot above was taken of where we camped for the night just below Nub Peak (2755m/9039ft). I wanted the perspective provided by a higher altitude vantage point, from this position Mount Assiniboine (3618m/11870ft) rightfully towers over Sunburst Peak (2,849 m or 9,347 ft).

4/7 To pull off this shot the approach also needed to align perfectly with Mount Assiniboine during darkness, along with being in the right season for the Milky Way. This conjunction of events (before considering terrestrial weather) is unlikely to happen again in my lifetime.

3/7 As Mars is on a different orbital ellipse to earth close approaches vary. During 2018's approach Mars was a mere ~1/30th of the distance from earth compared to its furthest orbit.

2/7 Astrological alignments have a way of making us feel insignificant. During 2018, Mars was on what is called a "close approach". The next close approach where Mars will appear this large will not be until 2035.
