We love the new APDU Guiding Principles for Public Data, but especially the top guiding principle: "public data should be public. Public data are of the people, by the people,
and for the people." YES!

Federal Science Workforce Declines Sharply Under Trump The last year was marked by turmoil at science agencies and the administration’s stated desire to shrink the federal workforce.

Federal science workforce in 2025:

NSF down over 30%
USGS, NOAA, and NIH down 20%
DOE down 17%
NIST down 15%
NASA down 12%

By comparison, the total federal civilian workforce was down approximately 10% last year.

The Washington Post's description of the bodycam video of his arrest last year, and the translation of Mr. Shah Alam's comments, is gutting. Remember, he was entirely blind in one eye and could only see three feet in the other, and he spoke virtually no English.

He spent a year in jail for this.

Refugee released by Border Patrol found dead, sparking outrage Surveillance video obtained by The Post shows Border Patrol agents releasing the partially blind refugee, who went missing for days before being found dead.

1. The footage shows Homeland Security is lying when he got indoors and was wearing prison booties I doubt are good for the cold.
2. Nurul Amin Shah Alam apologized to police BEFORE he was tasered when he was originally arrested.

US accused of ‘shameless exploitation’ over proposed Zambian health aid deal Leaked draft of $1bn memorandum of understanding reveals mandatory targets, sharing of data, and reported access to mining concessions

Rather than accept an absurd US “deal” pushing unfettered access to sensitive health data with no guarantees for Zambia, Zam chose sovereignty & public health dignity for its citizens.

Colonialism is dead & Zambia is ensuring it stays 💀!
Good on Zambia for standing strong for its ppl and future!🇿🇲 ✊

My plan tonight?
Making tacos with meat and tortillas from the carneceria in my neighborhood.

While listening to a Suzanne Collins audiobook.

Feels more productive than watching TV.

A lot of people, including me, were wondering how an IRB could ever approve this study.

The answer is that no IRB did. The person who “signed off” on approval from the only ethics board that reviewed it had resigned three years earlier. His signature was used without his knowledge.

As noted previously, my entire SOC 101 curriculum would have been illegal.
Accurate.
But illegal.

I don't live/teach in FL anymore, but it breaks my heart that a generation of students will now be brainwashed by the state.

Very excited that @lauralindberg.bsky.social and I just posted a preprint of a paper that we've been working on for a while, looking at the (lack of) comparability of the most recent NSFG with prior waves of data. Feedback extremely welcome!
