Growing threats faced by women candidates undermine our democracy This scholar has found that 86 per cent of replies to tweets sent to women MPs contained some form of harassment. This is a clear threat to women’s participation in politics.

We talk about “threats to democracy,” yet harassment targeting women in politics often receives less attention, despite its consequences for democracy

For #InternationalWomensDay, I’m re-sharing an article I wrote last year that is, unfortunately, still relevant: theconversation.com/growing-thre...

Graph showing the number of Canadian MPs with Bluesky accounts, by political party. There are 95 Liberals, 6 Conservatives, 10 Bloc, 7 NDP, and 1 Green.

Source: De Angelis, I., & Alexander, R. (2025). What are Canadian Members of Parliament doing on Bluesky? Canadian Journal of Political Science, 1–22. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0008423925100619

In the wake of X’s deepfake controversy, it’s surprising and disappointing to see that still only 35% of MPs are on Bluesky.

In honour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I'm sharing my new op-ed for The Conversation on the harms of online misogyny targeting women in public life, especially when amplified by political leaders.

Coronation RCMP cautions public on online conduct during by-election

County of Paintearth, Alta. - As a by-election unfolds in Eastern Alberta, the Coronation RCMP is reminding the public about the importance of respectful and lawful conduct, both in person and online.

In recent days, several candidates have reported receiving negative and, in some cases, potentially threatening commentary on social media platforms. While Canadians are entitled to express their opinions, even those critical of political figures, threats or comments that cross the line into criminal conduct will be taken seriously.

Uttering threats, including online or through social media, is a criminal offence under Section 264.1 of the Canadian Criminal Code. This includes threats to cause bodily harm, death, or damage to property. Individuals found making such threats may be subject to investigation and could face criminal charges.

Coronation RCMP encourages all members of the public to engage respectfully during the democratic process. We also ask those affected by threatening comments to preserve evidence, such as screenshots, and report concerning incidents to police.

Anyone with information or concerns is asked to contact Coronation RCMP at 403-578-3666 or call the RCMP non-emergency line at 310-RCMP (7267) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

For more about the Alberta RCMP follow us on Facebook @RCMPinAlberta and on X @RCMPAlberta.

Social media comments toward candidates in the byelection of Battle River—Crowfoot, where Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre is running, have gotten so bad, RCMP had to issue a news release reminding people online threats are still criminal threats. #CDNpoli

Scary. Glad to hear no one was injured in this incident but it bears repeating: the cost of being in politics shouldn't be violence or threats of violence. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/briti...
