I imagine a lot of people remember Icy Tower, Super Mario War, Worms Armageddon, 3D and Forts, Soldat... there's that one likely bootleg Mario game though which I can't find and I imagine it's gonna be a veeeery niche one!

Oh man I'm having a trip down the memory lane... Armagetron was also a cool one, I'd imagine a bit more known considering the movie Tron but who knows... a bit like multiplayer snake, but you if you perfectly turned you'd skid on a wall and get faster - could overtake and kill that way!

It was RC cars - you'd regain battery for doing tricks or you had to "pit stop" to recharge, and in the campaign mode you kept unlocking new cars, upgrades to them and earning money for races to buy those. It was quite fun!

And another one would be RecWar, I don't even know if it was published or how it was distributed, so might be a niche one?

One of those games would be Liero, which I just found has some community hosted online port of the game, so I'll definitely be trying to get my brothers or friends to play it with me!

Makes me think of Metroidvania and "utility-gated exploration and progression". Honestly though I sometimes like just... making numbers go up. But that's more of an MMO thing for me than something that fits an immersive RPG.
