Low wage. Little or no career progression. Poor recognition of nurses. Disrespectful of nurses in the planning of care or treatment plan of patients. Nurses are often seen as second class, after thoughts. The list goes on. I know, because I went through the same predicament too.

Time to fight back.

Ah yes, that’s on top of nursing care, giving meds, follow up on procedures on patients like suction, wound cleaning, hygiene care and so many other things.

It is not easy when you have high dependency cases under your care. The stress is mad. Basically, you work more than 10 hours a day at times.

Sometimes, when you have acute patients in your cubicle, juggling around is really difficult, especially in a cardiac/respiratory ward.

Heck, sometimes I had to do two “last offices” in one shift and during night shifts too.

It is not easy when you have lack of staff nurses in the ward, it is not easy when you have 10 patients in your care and all of them are high risk for fall.

These are just the “usual” time nurses do and generally, they work longer hours than that. Nurses would come an hour early to go through case notes and do handovers.

There will be follow ups, discharge notes, transfer of patients, wound/dressing procedures, and many more.

Afternoon shifts starts at 2pm to 9pm. Both come with an hour break in between, and 7 hours work.

Night shifts starts at 9pm to 7am, making it a 10 hour work shift. My night shifts back then would usually be 2 night shifts and one rest day.

Nurses in Malaysian public hospitals will be required to work for 45 hours per week, making it 9 hours a day in a 5-day week work.

I was a nurse back then, and normally, morning shifts, we would start work at 7am and finish by 2pm with all the documentations and discharge plans.

Should nurses call for a strike against the 45 hours work per week policy?
