Home Affairs Committee - Summary - Committees - UK Parliament
Summary for Home Affairs Committee
The Home Affairs Select Committee is a cross-party group of MPs that scrutinises the work of the Home Office.
We undertook a short, focussed inquiry into last yearโs summer disorder. Our full report is available at committees.parliament.uk/committee/83...

The disorder began following the tragic murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar in Southport. My thoughts are with the families of these poor children and the community in Southport. 8/9

This needs to be urgently - and regularly - updated. It should not have taken disorder on this scale to prompt revision. 7/9

Misinformation circulated online about the attacker, but the CPS wasnt clear what could be released without prejudicing a later trial.
The protocol used on sharing information dates from 2005. It is clearly unfit for the social media age. 6/9

Swift prosecution of those involved was critical in quelling riots and preventing further disorder.
This effectiveness was due to good links between policing, the @MoJGovUK and @CPSUK.
I commend this, but other crimes merit the same. 5/9

We found shortcomings in national policing structures. Forces couldnโt access support needed. Poor national systems impeded the response. National mobilisation came too late.
Ministers found the @HomeOffice โhollowed outโ without reliable info on no of officers deployed. 4/9
14.04.2025 05:13 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Itโs disappointing to see unsubstantiated commentary of โtwo-tier policingโ, undermining police who serve bravely.
Violence towards police officers was described as โquite incredibleโ. At least 199 officers were assaulted and 302 injured.
We commend the officers involved. 3/9
14.04.2025 05:13 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
The Select Committee found nothing to support claims of โtwo tier policingโ.
The level of violence determined the policing response - nothing else. The Ctte found the policing of the summer disorder entirely appropriate given the levels of violence and criminality. (2/9)

Today the cross-party @CommonsHomeAffs publishes our report on the disorder last summer.
July and August saw widespread disorder, following appalling murders of children in Southport.
This was violent disorder, not legitimate protest. It was properly policed as such. (1/9)

Great to see the announcement today that local arts organisations incl. Edinburgh International Festival, Dance Base, Summerhall, and the Brunton will be receive a boost in funding from Creative Scotland. Only possible thanks to the record devolution settlement, delivered by a UK Labour Government.

Chris signing Holocaust Book of Committment
We must never forget the horror of the Holocaust. It is our duty to learn from history, and our responsibility to ensure it is never repeated. Which weighs especially heavily in these difficult times. So it was moving to sign the Holocaust Memorial Trustโs Book of Commitment in the House of Commons.

It was so great to be at the Christmas lights switchon in Craigmillar. Lots of fun for the kids, amazing choir and fab to see the community coming together.
Well done Cheryl and the Places for People Scotland team for organising.
