First Minister says SFRS 'has to address those concerns'

In a statement, Scottish fire and rescue service chief officer Stuart Stevens said a confidential service had been launched to allow staff to report issues anonymously.

He added that bullying and harassment were 'not tolerated'.

Community safety minister Siobhian Brown said: “Bullying and harassment is unacceptable in any circumstances and any allegations must be taken very seriously.”

Chief fire officer Stuart Stevens said that no form of bullying, harassment or discrimination is tolerated “and action is taken where issues are reported”

He also said that one of his “top priorities is to improve the culture and leadership within the service”

We’ve also spoken with a former senior officer, a current employee and an ex-staff member, who all said there was a “toxic” culture

The former firefighter said: “Bullying and harassment, combined with immoral and unethical behaviours has become commonplace.”

Of these, 45 per cent reported the behaviour internally

Worryingly, just 17 per cent of people who escalated concerns were satisfied with the outcome

The remaining 83 per cent said they were unhappy with how the service handled the situation

An internal stuff survey carried out last year, and obtained by ITV, found that 21% of those who replied “have personally experienced or observed discrimination, bullying and/or harassment in the workplace over the last 12 months”.

Lynn Sweeney last year had a bullying grievance upheld

She was signed off work and never returned but said she was repeatedly pressured by senior management to return and to drop the complaint.

“At the end of the day, I loved my job,” she said. “But I hated the culture.”
