The belief that butterflies were the departing souls of the dead dates back to ancient Egypt. In 1810, folklorist Eleanor Hull recorded the case of a young Irish girl being told off by her friends for chasing a butterfly in case it was her recently deceased grandfather.

Murtumaton - Unbroken
Some people say that my artworks are grey. Someone last weekend described my colour use as quiet and that's just what I think! Just like in music: I don't have the need to play my colours in full volume all the time - and specially this year I've worked with silent ambience.

Perjantaina mut nukutettiin ekan kerran ikinä. Pelotti hirveästi, mutta siinähän vain nukkui. Ja sitten heräsi tokkuraisena. Ja nukkui uudelleen. (Eikä missään vaiheessa sattunut.) Mutta nyt sitten toipilaana, ja siksi ei ole taiteilijatapaamisia näyttelyssä. Mutta työt on!

Liiketila työhuoneena tuntui ensin aivan järjettömältä, mutta nyt kun olen viisi vuotta saanut tehdä töitä Keskustiellä, en voisi olla onnellisempi. Sijainti itsessään on ihana, keskellä kaupunkia hiljaisuudessa, mutta kun kesällä pitää ovea auki ja kuulee lähteen solinan ja puiden huminan....

This essay traces the long and turbulent history of American booksellers who have faced censorship, harassment, and even violence for defending the freedom to read. Through vivid anecdotes and historical cases-from undercover stings in the early 1900s and legal battles over “obscene” literature, to FBI surveillance of Black bookstores and bomb threats against feminist and LGBTQ+ shops-the author illustrates how bookstores have repeatedly become battlegrounds in the fight for civil liberties and free expression. Despite intimidation from both government and private groups, booksellers have pushed back, shaping legal precedents and rallying communities to defend First Amendment rights. The essay ultimately calls on readers to recognize bookstores as “arsenals of democracy” and to support their ongoing role in safeguarding intellectual freedom.

Signing new artworks to my May exhibition in Jyväskylä (Finland). Working title of the exhibition has been "Back to the Garden of Tears" - once again I've visited this imaginary garden of trees growing all kinds of tears. Or, rather this time the spirits and deities of the garden.

Nine years ago I made this print "the Silent Artisan of the Tears" (2016, edition of 30, sold out) as part of my theme exhibition "The Garden of Tears", the last exhibition of which was in July 2018. I've closed the gate of the garden once, but now it seems I'm getting back there...
