For me, the confirmation that climate mitigation must comply with sustainable development is just as central as the fact that states have individual obligations of ambitious climate mitigation measures under customary international law.

not sure I agree that this is an example in which the EU is making European states weaker in trade negotiationsโฆ there are substantial disagreements between the parties as it seems now - but the European view of this โdealโ is much more than I expect Switzerland to achieveโฆ

The EU-US trade deal is here - it's probably not the end of uncertainty as the details are ironed out, but it's a momentous deal. In sum, it's a political defeat for the EU, but in economic terms I see it as, under the circumstances, a win of sorts. ๐งต

If the current crisis creates the required incentive to finally negotiate modern multilateral trade-rules โ we would all win.

But the US have a valid point: the current system does not provide the instruments necessary to adequately address state capitalism, industrial policy and economic dependencies, let alone the protection of climate and human rights.

The news from across the pond are heart-wrenching and I can't agree with blaming the multilateral system for the US trade deficit: deficit is limited to goods (surplus in services), result of domestic policy and US remain the largest market in the world (hence multilateralism not that unfair).

The conditions that have led to whatโs happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

I've been digesting the court ruling and here are the implications for Europe. The 'reciprocal' tariffs are out, so no more 10 per cent general tariff for all countries. Sectoral tariffs on autos and steel/aluminum still in place so this doesn't affect the US-UK 'deal'. For the EU though..1/x

[FREE TO READ] The EU must stand up to the US presidentโs bullying for the sake of the world trading system
My take on today's US court tariff ruling. This is an excellent opportunity for the EU and other trading partners to quit preparing packages of concessions, tell Trump to shove it and get on with trading without the US.
