My review of LAUREN BENTON’s book on colonial ‘small wars’ just came out. Laurie does as convincingly global history as anyone in the history of law, tying wonderfully sculpted microhistories from various continents to a larger picture.

The SF Chronicle just published its obituary for my good friend, Jack Foley. They justly gave him a lot of words, but there was always more to say about this wonderfully many-sided person with so many deep talents. Here, the overused Whitman “I contain multitudes” fits!
