On Thursday, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing on “The State of K-12 Education.” Lawmakers and experts expressed concern about declining student achievement, citing recent NAEP scores and pandemic-related setbacks.

Key points: 
The need for evidence-based literacy instruction and stronger academic standards;

Growing support for teacher apprenticeships and mentorship programs to address shortages;

Concerns about chronic absenteeism, student engagement, and mental health challenges;
