πŸš€ Using data from a 40-year field trial, we show that organic cropping systems not only transform soil biodiversity but also supercharge its metabolic potential for nutrient cycling with lasting consequences for soil C, N, and P stocks. 🌾 #SustainableAgriculture #SoilHealth

Exactly. Most studies showing that fungi are more resistant to drought come from less disturbed systems such as grasslands. Cropping systems are often more disturbed (e.g. by tillage), which could disrupt the fungal network and exacerbate the response. In fact, we mention this in section 4.4.

All systems in the DOK trial are plowed to 20 cm and include a seven-year crop rotation with legumes. Therefore, even the conventional systems include some regenerative practices and comparison with more divergent systems (e.g. no-till, monocultures, etc.) could lead to different results.

Drought experiment in the DOK trial, Therwil, Switzerland.

Agricultural drought affects soil microbes, especially fungi and microbes associated with roots. Although organic and conventional farming systems promote unique microbiomes, both systems may encounter similar challenges during severe drought conditions. doi.org/10.1016/j.ej...
