Quay is a quack, a liar and a conspiracist hiding behind his expertise in an unrelated field to give a patina of plausibility to his lab leak fantasies. His thesis of genetic engineering is laughable to anyone who has ever worked with RNA viruses.

Quay is a crank. He starts for a conclusion and works backwards. As he has no idea of the actual virology his assumptions are all BS. Therefore he gets the answer he wants

This is the point. Though it pains me to say, as a scientist in his field he is immensely accomplished. But that doesn’t mean he is (as he clearly believes) infallible. Ironically the papers he rails against as β€˜fraud’ by β€˜stooges’ may have detractors, but have so far resisted all serious punches.

What is lamentable (and this applies to many senior bacteriologists in my recent experience) is that he doesn’t see that the same BioSafety and biosecurity issues that virologists have to deal with are exactly the same for him. And selecting drug resistance in pathogenic bacteria is GoF.

Just wait and see how much GoF research he does with dangerous pathogens at arms length….

Indeed, but that doesn’t mandate equal probability of a lab leak. The multiple lines of existing data is sufficient to make a compelling case for the market as the epicenter of SC2 emergence. Ultimately there is no evidence for the lab that is compatible with the existing data.

The Lab-Leak Hypothesis Made It Harder for Scientists to Seek the Truth Virus origin stories have always been prone to conspiracy theories. COVID disinformation has threatened researchβ€”and lives

More than 3yrs down the line this has held up surprisingly well, very much because of @lewan.bsky.social prescience borne from climategate and previous clashes with USRTK

What we couldn’t predict was how the conspiracists would destroy US biomed science

How conspiracy theories about COVID’s origins are hampering our ability to prevent the next pandemic The COVID pandemic likely began when the virus jumped from animals to humans, and didn’t start in a lab. But false narratives continue to circulate.

Apparently @gidmk.bsky.social has β€˜shirts for brains’ according to the Rutgers misogynist rage tweeter and BSNow CiC. Seemingly because he has the temerity to look at the data and conclude that there is no evidence for a lab leak.

I do hope that the shirts are loud with a Raccoon Dog print on them.
