The image features a gradient background transitioning from pink to blue. Text reads "Introducing the Trans Bill of Rights" with an icon of a paper and pen.
A colorful infographic titled "What is the Trans Bill of Rights?" outlines four points with icons: protections from employment and housing discrimination, equal access to medical treatment without discrimination, legal recognition of gender identity, and the right to use restrooms aligning with a person's gender identity.
ICYMI: I introduced my Trans Bill of Rights with @markey.senate.gov โ legislation to defend trans people across this country as Republicans continue to push anti-trans rhetoric and bills.
To our beloved trans community: We see you, we love you, and we will always stand with you.

I went to so many of Ted Gordonโs talks when I was a grad student, and I had such good interdisciplinary support for my African History research precisely because those programs existed. I felt like UT was bleeding out when I finished in 2024, but whatโs happened since is an absolute crime.

UT to consolidate gender and ethnic studies programs into one new department
Affected departments include those that focus on African and African Diaspora Studies, Mexican American Studies, Women and Gender Studies and American Studies.
This is a travesty. African and African Diaspora Studies at UT Austin has been one of the best programs in the country. And for historical context, this is explicitly about reversing the gains of student movements in the 60s and 70s.

The reason we do mutual aid & the reason why mutual aid is grounded in anticapitalist theory from a long time is that capitalism says your survival depends on what you can do for people. We say, no you deserve to survive by virtue of your humanity. If you can't produce, we will help you survive.

RESULT: Democrat Chasity Martinez wins a special election for a legislative seat in Louisiana, 62% to 38%.
This was a district that Trump carried by 13% last year, so a big overperformance by Dems, but the seat was already Dem-held.

Part of what makes life in the academy tough is holding and navigating both of these truths at the same time

This is 100% FALSE. Immigration judges do NOT play any role in issuing administrative warrants. They are generated and signed by ICE officers themselves. ICEโs own training materials say they canโt be used for a search of a home!

Generative A.I.
This class helps you to be a better writer and thinker. Generative AI (ChatGPT, Copilot, and other platforms) is neither writing nor thinking. Any use of Al in this class (whether to write, brainstorm, outline, or summarize) will be considered a violation of academic integrity. It undermines your intellectual development, for one: AI content is often inaccurate or hallucinatory and is always boring, banal, and average. This is by design, as generative Al works by predicting the most obvious or basic sequencing of words. Good writingwriting that is persuasive, powerful, lively, funny, surprising, rousing, insightful, transformative, provocative-requires human work. Human creativity is weird and variable and uneven, but it holds the capacity for growth, revelation, empathy, and brilliance. We urge you not to abandon the glorious experiential potential of human messiness and transformation for the tedium of robot sentences.
One further reason to abjure generative Al, especially in a class on environmental literature: in addition to its counterproductivity to your work as a writer and thinker, Al is enormously environmentally destructive.
Yes in thunder. My syllabus statement:
