Small black dog on a leash, sitting on a dog bed.

Please send good thoughts to Linguistipup (Ruthie), who got onto the dining table and ate a full pack of sugar-free gum. She’ll be staying at the hospital for at least 24 hours. I’d like to say I know she’ll be alright, but all I can say for sure is she is in the best hands.

Never thought I’d say this but I really do love teaching Romeo and Juliet.

On @collegeboard.org @ap-trevor.bsky.social using the "Look at me" passage from my book, Stranger Faces, for the AP Lang exam.

The College Board did not ask me or my publishers for permission to use my work. That does not, in my view, fall under "fair use," as it was not being used to teach. 1/

That would be amazing! I would love to see your syllabus, or any other supporting documents you might be able to share. I can’t DM you, but maybe you could DM me and I’ll send you my email address?

about doing this in high school, but I need to show them that this can be done in college, and my syllabus is not convincing them.

even though we are covering all the skills req’d of an ENG 101 class—reading and responding to a variety of genres, writing synthesis, rhetorical analysis, etc. Does anyone have an example of an intro college ENGLISH class that uses the lens/frame/theme of linguistics? I have a lot of stuff (2/3)

Sending out a bat signal for linguists: I’m trying to get my high school Linguistics and Media Studies class approved as an ENG101 course for early college / dual enrollment. The English dept at this community college keeps sending up roadblocks because there’s “too much linguistics,” (1/3)

One of my former students came back to sub today. She just graduated from college. I taught her in three classes and she loved reading, linguistics, creative writing, and science. We worked for hours on her college application essay. In August she is moving to SWITZERLAND to start her PhD!

Depends on the district, but the first ingredient is getting a teacher who wants to do it and feels confident in the subject matter. Some districts have very prescribed curricula and some allow for a lot of flexibility. My website (linked in my bio) has a lot of info!

Hi there, linguistics in high school is what I do!

Hot take as a long-time AP Lang and Comp teacher: AP Language and Composition isn’t really about language at all. If it was, kids would be learning about language change and variation, descriptivism, pragmatics, syntax—the actual study of language. #Collegeboard #APLang

In a bit of bright news, I just found out that we’ll have FOUR sections of high school Linguistics & Media Studies next year! This might be a record!

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects

So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social?

And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?

On this #PiDay, it’s incredibly necessary to remind everyone that the man who named 3.14… “pi,” Sir William Jones Sr, was the father of the man who theorized the existence of Proto-Indo-European, or PIE.

Depends. I wouldn’t get the fancy fine line ones. The sticks are pretty smooth and the .7mm are the smoothest.

I don’t use anything but Frixion erasable pens. Fully erasable and they come in great colors.
