So there used to be an informal venue in Seattle called the Loft. It was an ADA nightmare, with the only entrance being up and down one flight of stairs.

Internet speeds are another great one. 300 baud to cable modems was amazing but now we’ve largely stalled. I do think solar panels and batteries are improving quickly so there’s that.

Especially because we’ve pretty much maxed out manufacturing. If 2026’s chips are all sold out, how are 2028’s data centers going to be exponentially better?

Chips are already on the slower side of growth curves. Right now it seems the plan is to build larger and larger and larger data centers, but that’s the kind of growth that hits its limits faster.

The difference between a Vic20 and a 486 was immense. From a 2006 MacBook to a 2026? You’d largely have to read the specs.

Techies never believe that growth curves stop but they usually do. I’ve read so many appeals to eternal growth that I bounce hard off of them.

One thing I was thinking about on my flight is that the history of the 21st century is exponential progress that suddenly stopped being that.

Cars > prop planes > jets > rockets > nothing faster.

Cell phones > palm pilots > iPhone > next few generations > why bother upgrading?
