I det töntigaste tal som någonsin hållits av en levande människa bekräftade USA:s krigsminister det som hela världen redan anat – han har ingen aning om vad han håller på med i Iran.

Japp osannolikt. Så man får gå längre bak i tiden till tidigare vägskäl där ett sånt beslut *inte* togs för att kunna spekulera i en annan utgång. Men sen finns det ju externa variabler, främst att USA fått Trump som president 2 ggr - något Tehran inte kunde påverka.

This is not about whether you like this particular state or its elite, it’s about institutional resilience. And so far there is little evidence that this resilience has frayed to the extent that it puts its existence into question. 4/n

As long as the system can maintain basic operations that’s sufficient. The Islamic republic will take a hit if Khamenei is killed but it will not implode and its leaders, civilian and military, will most likely not run around like headless chicken. 3/n

He’s not the be all and end all of the system. Any institutional arrangement worth its salt must achieve system redundancy i.e. the ability to maintain operations even under duress - every cog is replaceable. Now those may be of varying quality but… 2/n

The thing to remember is that the Islamic republic is an oligarchy. This system relies on an elite consisting of overlapping circles of power players. The whole idea of “the Ayatollah” running some kind of family mafia is a misperception. So Khamenei is important but… 1/n

When Trump states that he wants regime change he’ telling Tehran that this is as an existential conflict. Trump is jumping up the escalation ladder without a clear strategy of how and what is to be achieved. The only thing guaranteed is that Tehran will feel forced to respond in kind.

Trump's speech shows that not only was this attack planned long before the negotiations started but that the aim and scope is maximalist: Regime change. For such "project" the target list is vastly longer than for a further destruction of the nuclear programme. 1/n
