Over the weekend I finished The Institute by Stephen King. This book was a bit drawn out but overall managed to be a gripping story that deconstructs a lot of notions I see going into stories like this.

Re: the Disaster, it’s basically an outbreak of what survivors call the Sunken. Think the Rage virus if it caused you to develop the mindset of a slasher killer. The necropolises are where the most charismatic Sunken set up semi-functional societies that lasted decades before being brought down.

Working on a new creative writing project that I have managed to write 13 pages of since August 1st. Today I finished a tentative map of the setting, happy to answer questions about it.

I don’t unambiguously love Odysseus but I’ll be honest: him murdering everyone who wanted to get with his wife and kill his son is a move I respect.

“The student failed to turn in an assignment, so they received a failing grade. They are not sent to a Siberian labor camp. There is of course an important difference. Sentences at Siberian labor camps ultimately came to an end while grades of zero on a 100-point scale last forever. Just two or three zeros are sufficient to cause failure for an entire semester and just a few course failures can lead to a student to drop out of high school incurring a lifetime of personal and social consequences.

Like is this not an unhinged thing to write?

My school is trying to convince us to move away from zero based grading for missing student work but to do this they used a paper that compared giving zeroes to sending people to a Siberian gulag and then said ‘one could argue a zero is worse because it has more permanent consequences’ 💀

Just finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It was a very gripping read and included what might be the most lovable spider(-like alien) in fiction . The ending was a bit of a mixed bag for me but still 4.5 stars.
