Katie Melua - Call off the search
Not groundbreaking but a lovely little album. A nice variety of styles which are all a great vehicle for her voice.

Chic - C'est Chic
A perfectly named album as it really is chic. The band is Chic, Nile Rodgers brand of catchy funk is chic, and the most common word on the album appears to be 'chic'.
C'est Chic en effet!

Next #5DebutAlbum8589 contender.
The Pixies - Surfer Rosa
Deserves a place on the list for its influence alone. So many of the artist I care about were inspired by this album.
Add to that the undoubted quality and varied sound and you have a real winner.

The Beatles - Rubber Soul
The start of The Beatles creative peak for me and the point where they transitioned from teen-driven pop act to something really quite special.
Ridiculous how many well known tracks there are on just one album.

This was nearly missed off my #AlphabettiDischetti B list because of the ellipses.
Phil Collins - ...But Seriously
A long way from my 1989 holy trinity (Disintegration, Stone Rose, 3 Feet High...) but at the time, this was what my parents were actually playing.

Not seen this on people's #5DebutAlbums8589 lists but it means a lot to me.
The Wonder Stuff - The Eight Legged Groove Machine
A very unique sound at the time. A mix of energy and witty lyrics that stood out. Their albums were a big part of my musical education.

A-ha - Hunting high and Low
In an era where grunge and indie dance took a hold, and new-wave and goth rock hit their peaks, it is worth noting there was still some great synth pop to be had.
And this debut is a high points of the genre.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - By the way
I've a savant-like habit of remembering times and places by the music I was listening to at the time. Mel mocks me for it. Daren't admit that this album reminds me of the old Safeway in Lincoln.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-nérd Skin-nérd)
There are a lot of late 60s/early 70s middle-of-the-road American rock on this list and they don't always float my boat. This one is more up my street than most in places.

Brewing up with Billy Bragg
His first full length album carries on where Life's a Riot left off. Short, sharp and stripped back songs about politics and love.
Witty, and essential to this day.

Softcult - When a flower doesn't grow
My second favourite album of the year so far. Highly recommended.
Great shoegaze from across the Atlantic. Impressive how the singer pulls off Dream Pop and Riot Grrrl vocals, often in the same song.

Today's #5DebutAlbums8589 choice is pulling double duty as it is also next up for my #AlphabettiDischetti.
Nirvana - Bleach
Didn't really make a dint at the time, only picking up sales after the success of Nevermind, but the quality is there. Grunge, but more accessible.

Enjoyable post-punk album. Seems to have lots of other elements thrown in. Not necessarily prominent, just particular little stylistic nods. Swear there was even some two-tone sounds.

Low - Hey What
Last albums released in Mimi Parker's, and therefore the band's lifetime. They left one last classic.
Impressive holds on to a low-fi sound whilst turning the reverb up to 11. That shouldn't make sense, but somehow it works.

Stone cold classic. Many great songs but the title track especially stands out. What a way for the duo to bow out.

Taking inspiration from others with today's #5DebutAlbum8589 pick.
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy.
Brilliant genre bending debut. Pop ballads meets noise rock, with tones of Goth-rock and early shoegaze. All delivered with a Joey Ramon sings psychobilly voice.

Only just picking up on this having missed the buzz when it first came out.
Stunning album. Can see why it is picking up so many accolades. Maybe not as genre bending as I was led to believe, but still outstanding.

Tracy Chapman - self titled
One of the all time great singer-songwriter albums. And an album that seems to transcend most tastes.
Beautiful vocals but with an awful lot to say. The lyrics are very challenging in places.

The Notorious BIG - Ready to die
Another mid-90s rap album I couldn't finish. I can see past the slurs, that is someone else's culture, but again the misogyny killed it.
Tried to keep going, but gave up after the third lot of simulated moaning.
What is he 12?

Think I'll forever feel guilty not putting this on my debut albums 90-94 list but it was such a tough list.
Make no mistake though, it is a vitally important genre defining album.

Steely Dan - Countdown to ecstasy
I feel the same way about this as some people do about Tubular Bells. Just because you can play all sorts of instruments doesn't mean you always should. It comes across as self indulgent and leads to boring songs.
#MusicSky
Yeah that is a bit weird. I actually like the rest of that song, just not the speak-rap but.

Placebo - Black Market Music
Rarely has an album grown on me like this. When I first bought this 25 years ago I really didn't like it. Can't even remember why, just didn't click
But all these years later, it has become one of my favourite Placebo albums.
