By combining reef fish + benthic surveys with MPA manager interviews, we found that enforcement and compliance matter more than MPA size or age for supporting reef fish!

Over half of Australian PhD graduates work outside academia, and less than 0.5% become professors, yet support for this transition is sorely lacking. We wrapped up with an all-star female panel featuring leaders from government (Maggie Muurmans, DETSI), consulting (Dr Beth Toki, BMT), CSIRO (@laurablamey.bsky.social), and the not-for-profit sector (Dr Mary Bonin, GBRF), who shared their career journeys and offered fantastic advice! 🌟

We had an incredible day with 35 attendees! Sessions included how to unacademify your CV and tips for strong job criteria responses with Magdalena Wong from UQ Employability, plus career insights from Dr Laura Puk (WWF Germany), who generously Zoomed in at 5 am European time! 😱

A very delayed post (life has been busy!), but 3 weeks ago Tania and I ran a @uq-cbcs.bsky.social-funded workshop, "Beyond Academia", to help ecology and conservation HDRs and ECRs explore careers beyond academia. Huge thanks to everyone for the amazing response and enthusiasm! 😍
