📢 New article alert! Freshwater salinization is an emerging global threat affecting ~1/3 of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, the salinity tolerance of most inland fishes remains poorly understood.

Glad to contribute to this review on the knowns and unknowns on #Salinity tolerance of #freshwater #fish,

I was just wondering the other day where all the salt on the roads goes after winter…

🐟Understanding fish salinity tolerance is critical to assess freshwater salinization impacts and predict the invasion potential of non-native species.

El 44% de los investigadores en ecología han sufrido el efecto Gollum. Ese comportamiento territorial extremo que lleva a algunos a sentir que ciertos temas o ideas les pertenecen: "mi tesoro".
44% 🤔... Poco me parece.

⬆️To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of young natterjack toads consistently using insect nests as shelters
✨A small discovery with big implications for understanding their early survival
@ahegalicia.bsky.social
🐸Sometimes two toadlets even shared the same refuge
🛡️These insect holes may be essential shelters, protecting them from predators and extreme temperatures during their vulnerable first days on land
🐸Who knew tiny toads had such clever survival tricks?
📄A recent study in Spain uncovered a surprising behaviour in natterjack toadlets
🐝Toadlets were regularly found sheltering in small insect holes, especially during the hottest hours of the day

🌊Marine ecosystems have long been impacted by human activities, causing biodiversity losses
🐦How have coastal bird communities in Europe fared over the last seven decades?

Happy to see our new paper in @globalchangebio.bsky.social, led by @canobarbacil.bsky.social, on long-term trends in coastal bird communities across 3 European seas. Bird abundance and diversity have increased over time, thanks to the role of protected areas. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
26.11.2025 19:25 — 👍 28 🔁 13 💬 1 📌 1✨Coastal bird communities are showing signs of recovery, but continued and site-specific conservation actions are needed to sustain and strengthen these gains.
26.11.2025 10:04 — 👍 9 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0📉Despite positive overall trends, site-level variability is high. Some sites still show declines in species richness (4.5%), taxonomic diversity (5.2%), and abundance (13.3%).

🚫Recovery patterns weren’t uniform:
🔹 In the Western Mediterranean, gains occurred mainly between 1970–2000.
🔹 In the Baltic Sea, increases started around 1995—especially in wintering bird communities.
📈Using 308 time series (1957–2024) across three European seas, we found overall increases in taxonomic richness (+1.7%/yr), taxonomic diversity (+1.4%), and abundance (+2.7%).

Happy to finally share this important article on barriers in ecology led by @canobarbacil.bsky.social in the journal Frontiers in Ecology & the Environment. The idea for this paper originated at the nice #ANdiNA workshop in Spain a couple of years ago.
