something is profoundly wrong with the comics industry when there is so much raw talent on display, perhaps more than at any time in history, some of the most talented artists in the world showing you their work for free, and yet crowdfunding is the most viable path for most creators.

Self-publishing is probably the only longterm sustainable option for a majority of comics people, given ::gestures broadly::

being the CEO/owner of a social media company is like being in LOTR and saying “Yeah but like…I can handle the ring. seriously I get it, I hear you, but like I’ll use it for good though. For real it is a gift, why not use it?”

I actually think there are many positive things about social media. I wouldn’t even have a whisper of a dream of a career without it. I’ve connected with anyone I’ve ever worked with through it. this conversation here is positive. but we can’t kid ourselves that the CEOs/owners are morally perfect.

I think the greatest trick that social media ever pulled was making people think it was necessary to post to have a career (and because enough people believe it, it probably is). that’s like a cigarettes company convincing you that you need to smoke a pack a day to pay your bills.

people shouldn’t be so shocked and surprised by the CEO of this or that social media company not being morally pure. the truth is, we’re forced to use these platforms to get the word out about our work, and if we didn’t have to, I have my doubts that any comics people would use them.

you can own a casino and use that money for good, and maybe even have good intentions. but at the end of the day, it’s still probably morally wrong to construct a fly trap for the human soul. there are positive uses of social media, no doubt, but it is still designed to abuse your nervous system.

I’m not sure it’s possible that a social media company can ever be purely benign and benevolent…they are like casinos, designed to addict you and rob you of your time and energy. labyrinths of distraction with no windows or clocks. and no matter how many likes and RTs you get: the house ALWAYS wins.

why do they keep making Tron movies? personally I thought the first one was sort of a Tron and done situation
