personally I think they are terrible phrases and they cause me great psychic pain, but hey I guess it’s in the eye of the beholder

I also think β€œat the end of the day” should be illegal. and you know what, while we’re at it…no more exclamation points. honestly we don’t really need them. hundred dollar fine for every exclamation point you use.

why can’t insane gov’t policies ever be fun instead of always darkly malevolent? what about banning the phrases β€œhad had” or β€œthat that”. come on. you can write without these, and they are objectively terrible. can’t we have a bi-partisan effort on forbidding had had forever

I think the problem with Star Wars is that originally, George Lucas took huge creative, financial, and personal risks to make it. It was a huge gamble: not a sure thing. now there is no single individual with so much to lose, but a company that wants to bet on sure things only.

social media is the only vice that you can feel guilty about not doing enough

β€œYou have to remember that Star Wars came from nowhere, American Graffiti came from nowhere. There was nothing like it. Now, if you do anything that's not a sequel or a TV series or looks like one, they won't do it.” - George Lucas in 2015

17.11.2024 00:02 β€” πŸ‘ 19    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

yeah definitely. Mandalorian and Andor broke that trend a bit, but it’s notable that they’re both TV shows i think.

to be fair tho: I honestly think everything good takes inspiration from other things, no man is an island, nothing is created in a vacuum.

i mean Johnson probably got a percentage of the profit as well, but still: no matter how good or bad it was, he was walking away with 5 mil. there was a safety net, whereas for Lucas, not so much. it was sink or swim

16.11.2024 22:28 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

yeah fair enough. my point is more about how Lucas had personal and financial investment. he had a lot to lose…he was paid 600 k (adjusted for inflation) and only made a bajillion dollars because it was so successful. modern directors (Johnson got 5 mil) get paid vastly more no matter how good it is

it would be so easy to become a right wing grifter and make an obscene amount of money, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. i passed the test…i will diminish and go into the west.

Horror movie parody that’s an adaptation of the beloved game Jenga

16.11.2024 19:08 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

all that having been said, elephants?!? there were costumed elephants in SW? I don’t remember that, that’s cool if so

16.11.2024 19:01 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

OF COURSE I know and acknowledge that many other people worked on SW. for example, the editors (including Marcia Lucas, his wife) are unsung heroes who probably rescued that film.

it just wasnt relevant to the point I was making. there are limited characters, I can’t say everything that I want or e

16.11.2024 19:00 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

my original point was more that Lucas was the impetus for SW, and the single individual with the most to lose (he even took a big pay cut for merchandising/sequel rights, huge risk at the time).

now, there is no single individual with anything at stake, only a massive corporation

16.11.2024 18:57 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

no im sorry it was George Lucas alone, no one else worked on Star Wars, you’re mistaken

16.11.2024 18:45 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

can you really blame me for taking a break from X for a while? i mean, even Stephen King couldn’t hack it here. and he’s, like, really good at dealing with scary stuff

16.11.2024 17:36 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

why are conservatives so against paying taxes? whatever happened to rendering unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s?

16.11.2024 17:34 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

nah it was Lucas alone, everyone else involved was a bunch of hacks.

no im just kidding of course you’re right, but my point was more about how Lucas was the impetus for Star Wars, the driving force behind its creation, and the person who individually had the most to lose

16.11.2024 06:05 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

it may be that there’s just no way to manufacture passion for a crazy idea…it has to come from some mysterious place within, some drive from deep inside us that compels us to make mythology. maybe all the money in the world isn’t enough to reproduce that.

16.11.2024 05:19 β€” πŸ‘ 21    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

we look back on Star Wars now as if it was inevitable. but at the time, it was the underdog of underdogs. Sci-fi just wasn’t the big budget genre it is now. all the major characters were relatively unknown actors. now, Star Wars couldn’t be any further from being an underdog.
