Yeah I was a bit confused about the claim that he didn't hide Jews because that's something that appears to have primary source backing. I don't see how being a political prisoner disproves that.

I see a lot of places reporting that his monastery sheltered between several hundred and 2,000 Jews, and that he was very accommodating towards them. One place cites primary sources that include eyewitness testimony but I can't confirm it.

My thinking is that if he sheltered as many Jews as they say at his friary, then there's some amount of redemption there even if at the beginning he was part of the problem. The story needs to be presented that way instead of him being completely stainless his whole life.
