I follow this particular topic VERY closely, so here's what really happened and why this isn't true AT ALL...🧵

I see that the Contrarian does offer free subs, which I'll do. At some point, though, they'll have to go to paid subs. They all do. I get @phillewis.bsky.social's newsletter for free, but I have to subscribe to get more in-depth stories. The free info is always limited.

It's not a sustainable model for media. It presents unique opportunities in this moment, but it is not realistic for consumers in the long run. The result is that people tune out. Instead of good, reliable info that they can't afford, they get none. 4/4

Personally, I'd like to subscribe to Acosta, Reid, Phil Lewis, etc., not to mention those run by friends and colleagues. But I can't. Economically, it is not feasible. So, who gets my subscription dollars? No one. 3/x

Substacks and other newsletters & podcasts & columns cost money. Understandable, as those producing content deserve to make a living commensurate with their skills. But how are consumers supposed to handle this? Pick one or two for subscriptions? 2/x

When great journalists lose their roles with mainstream media outlets (@joyannreid.bsky.social & @jimacosta.bsky.social, for example), they have the followings to start their own outlet, like Substack. Great opportunities for them. The problem for consumers is... 1/x

This documentary on @cnn-news.bsky.social was simply incredible - moving, eye-opening, captivating. I had no idea the depths of his talents and the breadth of his credits (though I do still remember every word of his hits, apparently!). #nevertoomuch

I wish American media would have reported on this case. It's astounding and horrifying but eye-opening - everything from Gisele's fight for justice to the defense of some of the rapists at trial.
