oh yeah! its right in his late sweet spot era for me (late 60s, like Ubik and Androids etc) - still has his freewheeling pulp narrative charm but starts to weave in the super esoteric and mystical themes he dives into headfirst later on

funny you mention that, i just picked up a copy of The Ticket That Exploded to read on break from PKD!

DO ANDROIDS DREAM is what i usually recommend as a start - for the above reasons and also because it's familiar (from the film) but immediately sets itself apart when you realize how wildly different, and much deeper/ richer, Dick's version is (despite the adaptation being incredible!)

UBIK, GALACTIC POT-HEALER, FLOW MY TEARS THE POLICEMAN SAID, MAZE OF DEATH or even revisiting DO ANDROIDS DREAM are all great to start with - in the late 60s he mastered his pulp style and hadn't yet veered into his headier Exegesis territory, but weaves those concepts into really fun yarns

Ooh good Q! UBIK is an all timer, Peakest PKD - but maybe worth saving for a few in. (also: avoid later ones like VALIS, RADIO FREE ALBEMUTH or even SCANNER DARKLY etc until you've read a bunch of his stuff because they rely a lot on familiarity with his other work for max impact) - I'd say... (1/2)

it's been 20 years since i ran out of books to read the first time around; some of these i read much earlier, so they finally feel very fresh again

Next Up: Galactic Pot-Healer, one of my all time favorites.
